Roots is a two player base building sidescroller. Players each take control of one of two gnome factions. One faction lives in the upper world, the other in the underworld. Both must feed a caterpillar/ worm to avoid being eaten by it. If a player can no longer feed the growing animal, they lose the game. Each player can disrupt the other faction by planting aggressive plants to destroy roots and buildings that are an important part of their infrastructure. The game can be played with two controllers, on a split screen. Since each player spawns at a different point on the map, they don't know where each other's buildings are located. They must keep an eye on the efficiency of their buildings and the growing roots to find the best attack points.
