Hello Operator

People would call in to the operator who would have to patch them in to the requested line. The operator would then connect them and that connection would be occupied until the call is finished (indicated by a light on the switchboard). If there are no available connections then the operator must put them in the hold queue, where a timer counts down until they hang up. Certain callers or characters will take longer calls or will wait different amounts of time.
