Tom Fulp founded NewGrounds.com in 1995 after spending his youth making home movies and text adventure games. Since 99' NewGrounds.com has come to be one of the most prominent digital media sites hosting user-produced submissions for games, animation, and short film. In 2003 the site added an Audio Portal and co-authoring system so artists could team up with musicians and credits could be better represented. The collaboration has continued to grow ever since, with the addition of an Art Portal, Writing Forum and numerous events and game jams. Creators of all kinds go to NewGrounds.com to share and even sell their work across the web.

Global Game Jam is an annual, international accelerated video game development challenge. Participants develop games from scratch in a 48 hours, based on a secret theme chosen by organizers. The event attracts video game developers from all sides of the industry. Students, hobbyists, industry professionals from well respected game studios, as well as independent video game developers will work solo or in teams to make original, independent games. It is an inspirational test of skill, resolve, creativity and perseverance and an opportunity to meet other like minded folks passionate about indie games.

RVA Game Jams is a community project created to get video game developers from the Richmond area together to participate in game jams, learn more about developing games, and network with each other. We are interested in exploring games as a form of art, communication, education and entertainment. We operate entirely on community support and donations and want to help EVERYONE make a game.

The Depot was originally built in 1907 as a station for the Richmond-Ashland trolley line. Since then it has undergone a state-of-the-art renovation, which has modernized the building while preserving its historical character. The Depot houses a new facility dedicated to interdisciplinary collaborations, events and creative entrepreneurship education. One of The Depot’s features available to Global Game Jam participants will be a motion capture studio.

From January 20th-22nd 2017 RVA Game Jams will facilitate a meet-up for participants of the Global Game Jam an the historic space of The Depot at VCU with generous support from VCUarts Departments of VCU Kinetic Imaging, VCU Communication Arts, and VCU Department of Art Education. All participants must be 18 or accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. We welcome professional and amateur game developers, students musicians, artists, designers, friends, press, and public at this free event. Donations are welcome.
