Twitchual

Twitchual. Created for January 2016 Global Game Jam, inspired by the theme "ritual". You are a small articulated critter whose goal is to entice and mate with other such critters while staving off mounting and ultimately fatal frustration. You have a few simple joints that you control directly to move around and dance. There are many uniquely coloured / patterned prospective mates around you, some of which have a particular dance that they will find attractive. A dance is comprised of three steps, steps are puctuated and distinguished with a very brief period of complete rest. A step is comprised of a particular motion of a particular joint at a particular speed. Through trial and error you must discover each individual critter's chosen dance, if they have one. If you perform the first step of their preferred dance in their view they will begin watching you. If you perform the first two steps while they are watching you, they will wriggle with excitement. If you perform their full dance, while they are wriggling, they will begin following you. Raising a critter's interest level will relieve some frustration, buying you more time, but their interest will eventually wane if not stoked. Once a critter has followed you for a while they will change colour and flee, at which point you must chase them. When you catch them, you will have mated, and they will return to the crowd. Mate with three other critters before your frustration overloads!
